Design Plan: Research Synthesis

Purpose:

Topic: Is technology positively or negatively affecting the everyday lives of people?

Purpose Statement: Technological advances have had a huge impact in recent years. This huge impact can affect the lives of people in either positive or negative ways.  I am going to create three subtopics on this topic. These subtopics will be: technology use in the classroom, workplace and the usage of social media.

Audience: Anyone of any gender, race or age. People of all ages are using technology.

Context: What could be negative about technology? What is positive affects of technology?

Strategies:

Ethos- The ethos that best's supports my purpose would for people to see my sources used throughout the paper and the works cited page. This shows credibility because I referenced certain authors and with the works cited page, people can look up the articles and books I used within my essay to make sure they are reliable sources.

Logos- The arrangement of the paper will go in the order in which the thesis statement is set up. Each paragraph will open with a few sentences about the topic and then the sources will be added within the paragraph as needed.

Pathos- I would like to create pathos by trying to relate to people's lives. Most people have been through school and work and has dabbled with the latests social medias. My essay is about how technology affects people's everyday lives and I feel that they would be able to relate to the topics I have chosen.

Medium:
I am using 4 scholarly articles and 2 books for my sources.

Arrangement:
I will talk about technology and how it has advanced as a whole and then break it down into how it can be negative or positive on a person's life. My thesis statement will break down my topic into 3 subtopics; school, work, and social media. My body paragraphs will start with some background information about each of the topics and then sources will be brought in as needed. The conclusion will sum up the essay as a whole and end with how technology will always be advancing and as people living along side it, they need to advance with it.

Testing:
I will have my roommate or a friend read over my essay and look for grammatical errors and to see if my body paragraphs explain each topic clearly.

Work, Career, Vocation

The meaning of work to me is to complete multiple tasks for someone of a higher power. The result of doing these tasks, is making money. When I think of the word work, I think of the job I have on campus or my previous job I had in high school. I also think about the jobs of my parents and what they do when they go to work. Although my dad does go to work, he isn't working for a higher power. He himself is the boss.

The meaning of career to me is something that you do in your everyday life. A career could be a calling in life, or what you are meant to do when you are older. When I think of the word career, I think about my college work and how it will get me to the job I want to pursue when I am older. A career can be something someone is passionate about. Career is a more powerful word than work. Work can just be something that a high school student does to make extra money. However, a career is when someone has decided what they want to do everyday until the day they retire.

The meaning of vocation to me kind of goes along with the meaning of career. Vocation goes along with a persons calling in life or what purpose they serve in this life. When I think of the word vocation, I think about what my purpose is in life and what I am meant to do when I finish college. Am I going to become the physical therapist that I want to be now or am I going to have a different calling in life. I feel that a person won't know what their calling in life will be until they become older or when they get through some of college.

Rhetorical Analysis
Design Plan
Purpose:
Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this essay is to analyze four posters by looking at the different components of each poster and figuring out why each component was picked. I chose to do Alice in Wonderland for my analysis. The movie can be looked at as whimsical and resembles Disney World. By using these posters, I want to analyze how the posters look whimsical and the differences from the older poster versions to the newer poster versions. I also want to compare the Disney version of the posters, which are the older posters, to Tim Burton version of the posters.
Audience:
I feel that my audience could be of any age, gender or race. Anyone can see this movie. The posters may attract more of a younger audience because of the colors and the way the posters look.
Context:
This communication could take place at any time or any place. There is usually never a wrong time to talk about movie posters.

Strategies:
Ethos- The ethos that best’s supports my purpose would be for people to see the posters I had picked out. It shows credibility and that I know what I am talking about. These posters have been seen by many people before and because of that, it shows credibility.
Pathos- I would like to create pathos by picking out posters that have a lot of color and posters that people know about. I feel that posters that have a lot of color will spark interest in people and make them want to look at the posters. Picking out movie posters that are familiar with people may make them happy and make them think about the last time they saw that particular movie.
Logos- The arrangement of the posters will be in chronological order. The posters will start off from the oldest poster version to the newest poster version. I will talk about the same things for each of the posters and then talk about the posters as a whole.

Medium:
I am using movie posters.

Arrangement:
In my poster analysis I will first talk about the posters individually and then all the posters as a whole. When analyzing each individual poster, I will talk about the colors and font size and try to depict why each of the posters look the way they do and why I think the designers of these posters made the choices they made. The posters that I chose don’t have text, but I feel that they don’t need to text. The posters themselves are so detailed and interesting to look at, that just by looking at them, people would want to see the movie.
Testing:
After putting everything together, I will show my roommate or a friend. After showing her, she can talk about the things she sees in the poster and then I can compare her answers to mine.

Poster Analysis
Crazy Stupid Love

By looking at the movie poster for Crazy Stupid Love, I can tell that this movie was made recently. I came to this conclusion because the poster includes actors and actresses that are popular right now. I can also see that the pictures on the poster are really clear meaning that the movie was made recently because technology has allowed for pictures to look almost real. The genre being publicized in this movie poster is a comedy. I made this judgement because the actors that are in the movie are usually in comedies. I also made this judgement because the picture on the movie poster is funny. I feel that the designers for the poster chose the colors they did because they kind of represent what the movie is about. The colors are light, meaning the movie can be a funny but warm hearted. When I first look at the movie poster I see the white title. The designers bolded the word love; I think they did this because it shows what the movie is about. They chose the background to be funny so that the word love doesn't scare a person off because they think it will be a sappy movie. Overall, the poster grabs my attention because it shows that the movie is about love but is also going to be funny. I think the designers did a good job or portraying that.

Narrative

Not many people realize how fast time flys by. At one moment I am at my first gymnastics meet when I was about 6 and the next I am applying for college. College is a huge step in life and I am the first in my family to take that step. Since none of my family went to college, the idea of going to college was never forced into my head. Although I was never forced to really think about college, I have been through a lot of events in my life that has made me the person I am today and has brought me to where I am now. School, church, sports, my high school graduation and my family are some of the reasons I had even considered going to college. I actually liked going to school when I was growing up; I loved to learn new things and meet new people. Going to church really put a perspective on my life and gave me goals that I aimed to reach one day. Sports challenged me and gave a sense of responsibility and commitment. I started joining different sports when I was really young and once I had joined gymnastics, I had found the sport I loved. This sport was extremely strenuous and made me more of an adult. I had to learn how to balance schoolwork and after school meets all at once. I had become more responsible. Once I graduated high school, everything started falling into place and I realized what my priorities were. Last but definitely not least my family; without my family I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Applying for college wasn’t the easiest for me since I didn’t have anyone with any prior experience to help me. I wasn’t sure what schools to look at or how to go about filling out applications. I was pretty much on my own when it came to picking out which schools to look and visit. Although no one in my family went to college, they supported me through every step of the way, which helped me greatly on my road to success.

Design Plan

Purpose:
Purpose Statement:
I want to show people the components of what makes me successful. I want to raise questions on whether or not people think of the same things I do that makes them successful or if not, what things make them successful. My photographs will be of parts of my life that has made me successful. Such as, school, church, sports, my high school graduation and family. I hope that by seeing the things that make me successful, people will start to think about what makes them successful. The worst possible outcome would be that people wouldn’t reflect on what they see in my photo essay. Overall, I want people to reflect on my photo essay and think about the things in their lives that make them successful.
Audience:
I feel that my audience could be of any age, gender or race. Anyone can reflect on what makes him or her successful. College students can really relate to this because college is a big step in life and getting there makes a person successful. College students can reflect on how they go to where they are now.
Context:
This communication could take place at any time or any place. There is never a bad time to talk about what things in life made a person successful. This communication could possibly be found on posters or a website.
Strategies:
Ethos- The ethos that best’s supports my purpose would be for people to see the pictures of my childhood. It shows credibility and that I know what I am talking about. The photos will show everything in my life that has made me successful and that has gotten me to where I am now.
Pathos- I would like to create pathos by taking photos of my childhood. I feel that these photos will spark some type of emotion in someone because the photos relate to things in my life that I cherish. The photos will be outlined in black so it catches a person’s attention.
Logos- The arrangement of the photos will be in chronological order. The pictures will start out early in my life and gradually get up to my high school graduation. The photos will be arranged close together so everything can be looked at, at once. Captions will be used to further explain each of the pictures.
Medium:
I am using photographs for my photo essay.

Arrangement:
In my photo essay I will be setting it up as a progression through my life. The photos will be in chronological order starting from when I was in kindergarten to when I graduated high school. Each slide will have captions to further explain the pictures.

Testing:
After putting everything together, I will show my roommate. After showing her, she can give me some feedback if everything makes sense and help me if I need any improvement or if I have any mistakes.

Photo Essay

Photo Essay Reflection

After finishing my photo essay, I am now able to look back at all the struggles that I went through to finally finish this essay. In the beginning I choose to do tanning as my topic and my photos would be of everything a person would see when they would walk into a tanning salon. After putting some thought into it, I realized that I didn't really like my topic and I felt that I would not have much to work with. I did take some photos when I went to a tanning salon but, I felt that the pictures didn't have meaning. I decided then that I needed a new topic. It took me awhile to figure out another topic to pick but, after some thinking I decided to do my topic on the road to success. I felt that it was easier for me to find picture of what has made me successful. Finding the pictures was fun, I was able to reflect back on my life. Writing my narrative was a lot easier to write also because it is about my life. After I finished putting together my PowerPoint, I really liked the outcome of it and it made me glad that I changed my topic.

What Does Writing & Design Have To Do With Good Communication?

The relationship between writing and design has a lot to do with good communication. In todays world, technology has become extremely popular. Most everyone is using it. Using design while writing is a good way to communicate. Since everyone is using technology, design is a big part of their lives. Reading papers is not as fun as you would think. Adding design to these papers helps grab a persons attention. When people see that design is involved, they can tell that the writer is a good communicator. They can tell that the writer is using design as a good way to appeal to people. In that sense, the relationship between writing and design shows that the writer is a good communicator. The generation of kids that grew up with technology are used to writing with design. This relationship also shows room for opportunities and creativity.

What I Think About Blogs?

I have never really given any thought about blogs. I have only heard about them through television shows and movies. To me a blog is where a person can write about anything they want. It allows a person to speak their mind. I think a blog could be useful because, as I said before it allows a person to say anything that is on their minds. I feel that blogs can be therapeutic. Instead of talking to someone about things going on in their lives, people can blog about it. It is also cool that people can respond to a persons blog. Getting feedback could help a lot. I don't think that a "blog" or a "blogger" signifies a specific type of person. I feel that anyone can blog. Blogging can be looked at differently from person to person. A blog could be useful for me because I can write about anything I want. Instead of being told what to write about, I can type about whatever is on my mind that day. It would be a good place to "vent". To me a blog would be very therapeutic.
